For the Zine Spotlight this week, I'll be taking a look
at Planet Relish - "The web's first speculative
humor magazine" (http://www.planetrelish.com/). A little humor
never hurt anybody, right?
Planet Relish is a free, speculative humor
magazine. If you are looking for a chuckle or just
looking for a good home for that funny story you have on
your desk, this is the place to look.
You will find single banner advertisements at the top of
each page, but these are not as intrusive as those you
might find on, say, Yahoo.
Download time is quick and painless. The pale yellow
background and fonts are the just the right size for easy
reading. The artwork on this site is minimal. The
organization is user friendly and at the time of review,
all of the links are active - no dead-links to be found!
Planet Relish no longer accepts reprints or
poems about headless chickens, but they will accept a
funny short story with a focus on speculative fiction.
Submissions Guidelines (http://www.planetrelish.com/submission.html) are very clear
about what is required and how to submit your work.
Submissions can be made either electronically or by
postal mail. Both addresses are clearly posted. All
submissions must be science fiction, fantasy or horror.
They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that you be
honest with them about it from the start. The pay rate is
a flat $10 for each piece of fiction. If you would rather
accept credit for paid advertisement arrangements with
the editor can be made once your story has been accepted.
Now, for the most important part. Planet Relish
buys exclusive first web rights. After a period of 66
days all rights revert back to the author. This site does
not have an archive. The title and your name will
continue to appear in the history after the 66 days but
there is no live link to your work.
While all of this sounds good, the main problem I found
with this site is that it hasnt been updated since
November 2001. The editor has also put out a call for
help in updating the history page. I dont have an
estimate on response time but from what I have gathered
by word of mouth, be prepared to wait.
I rate this site * * *
