Spotlight on Deep Magic
by Ciara Grey

This issue I will be taking a look at
Deep Magic. - a fantasy-fiction e-publication that publishes monthly.

Deep Magic is a pleasant and well-organized site, which makes it easy to navigate. If you would like to know when the new issues of their monthly ezine are ready, then you may subscribe for free.

In order to read current or past issues you may download them in zip or pdf formats. This is also free. Downloading is quick and easy. You will need Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or better to read the files. Adobe Reader is free to download, and a link to Adobe is provided on the home page.

The editors accept mainly high fantasy but will consider science fiction. They prefer stories that aren't middle of the road, typical fantasy or science fiction. Stories with sex scenes, vulgar language and gratuitous violence will not be accepted. Deep Magic primarily takes short stories and will consider serialized novels that are finished works.

Replies to submissions generally take three to four weeks. Writers are encouraged to make use of online writing workshops and discussion groups. Links are provided on the Submissions page.

The links page is extensive with sites of writers and artists. I found many links to sites that are helpful to writers. There is also a page with very entertaining and informative articles about the craft of writing. Some of them run a little long but they are worth taking the time to read.

The one thing that gave me pause on this site was the legal disclaimers and terms of agreement. It is written in legalese. If you aren't familiar with how to interpret this kind of thing then take your time and read carefully.

Deep Magic asks for exclusive electronic rights for the duration of publication, and up to three months after that. Deep Magic is currently a non-paying site, although they are looking at ways to remedy this. Authors may simultaneously submit a story that has been accepted by Deep Magic to other forms of publishing that are not electronic.

I give Deep Magic a rating of
* * * *. You can visit this site at http://www.deep-magic.net/index.html
