This issue of Zine Spotlight I’ll be taking a look at Bovine Free Wyoming, a zine that is geared towards literature of any genre and poetry as well as art. Flash fiction, as long as it is quality work, can also find a nice home here.
The site itself is a simple design that has no moving graphics or sound to slow download time. The menu to view work and art is very easy to navigate. The text font is large and easy to read. They only thing I didn’t care for was that on my computer the page was large enough to require me to have to scroll left to right. The lack of ads popping up, under and all around makes this well worth the effort!
At the bottom of the home page there are buttons to click on where you find the submissions guidelines and links. Bovine Free Wyoming is a paying site that accepts simultaneous submissions. They pay $10.00 US for every piece submitted. Bovine accepts reprints if you inform them in your submission.
Bovine does not archive their newsletter. One time electronic rights revert immediately back to the author as soon as the next issue of the newsletter are published. Back issues of the newsletter are free to those who wish to have them.
On the whole this is a nice site that showcases the writing and not the computer graphics. I found this to be refreshing and very professional. The writing is high quality and prior writing credits are not considered when they select from the submissions. The response time is very reasonable. If you don’t here from the editors within a month writers are able to email them and inquire about the status of their submission.
With the problems of email viruses these days, understandably, Bovine won’t read and will delete any email with an attachment unless you have other arrangements with the editors.
