A Time To....
The Best of the Lorelei Signal
Edited by Carol Hightshoe

It's not often that I have a chance to read a book for pleasure, so when I had a few spare moments to read a NY published book this past week, I thought I was in for a treat. Unfortunately, it failed to live up to my expectations. However, the two small press books I read more than made up for the disappointment.  My reading experiences this week made me question the publishing industry. Why are talent writers like these being overlooked by NY in favor of authors who's success depends on who they know or who they're related to? I don't have an answer for that, but I'm finding in recent months that my book purchases are coming more from small publishers than the major NY houses.

"A Time To..." Volume 1, The Best of the Lorelei Signal 2006, compiled by editor, Carol Hightshoe was so enjoyable that when I finished reading the anthology, I promptly visited the e-zine and read the latest issue: http://www.loreleisignal.com/CurrentIssue.html.

Hightshoe has proven herself as a talented editor in her choice of stories she publishes. "A Time To..." is a fine collection of dark fantasy stories that should only be read late at night if you're not given to dreams of torment and anguish for these stories could inspire a few.

Kayelle Allen's "The Last Vhalgenn" delighted me with its political twists and the strength of the protagonist's beliefs and loyalties. "Debtor" by J.Michael Matuszewicz surprised me with its heroine's audacity and courage. Michele Acker's "Blood & Ashes" was everything I expected from this talented writer: clean, enjoyable and well written. The stories feature strong minded women who may or may not make the right decisions. Whatever the outcome of their choices, they leave you with no doubt of the strength or their convictions.

Not for the faint of heart, "A Time To..." is filled with foreboding tales that will delight the dark fantasy reader.  Available in print and e-book format from Lulu.com
