Art Schools Build Confident Writers
work of fiction is very much similar to creating a work
of art. Rather than standing in front of a blank canvas
with your pallet and brush ready for action, you sit idly
at your desk in front of a computer screen. The hardest
parts always tend to be the beginning; the first
sentences are what need to capture your audience. You
have to have your idea set in stone the moment your
fingers start drilling away at that keyboard. Your first
sentence must be the lasso that grabs your audience
refusing to relinquish its hold to the very last word.
Where top photography schools may require a
single instance of greatness in each piece you create,
writing starts with something amazing and must continue
to hold the attention of the reader.
From the very start, you must decide what kind of story
is it that you plan to write. Is it romance, mystery, or
horror; could it be a combination of all three? You
cannot start a story with the intention of figuring out
what you plan to write as you create. The mistake this
creates is a disjointed story that takes to many
different directions, losing the interest of your
readers. You must also decide are you writing a novel or
a short story. You need not to write a novel in order to
tell a compelling story. Advertising schools train people for
years on how to relate detail stories with very limiting
Once you have finally developed what kind of fiction you
plan to write you must fully develop your characters and
the main plot for your characters. Characters are like
your children: you create them and you must develop each
of them completely. You want your characters to be more
than useless dribble on a page. Take a page from film schools; you want the characters and the
plot to develop around your audience allowing them to
feel and see every moment as if it leaps off the page.
Once you get the core: your characters and the journey
they embark on, you can truly begin to write.
Most writers over think their works as they put it in
front of them, but this only causes complications.
Instead, allow the words to flow out of you on to your
screen. Write a few paragraphs take a moment and sit
back, admire what you have created, and then continue. An
interesting path to take is an example from animation schools; tell your story
from different points of view. Rather than having one
individual as the storyteller, allow your other
characters to take center stage. What happens in the plot
will affect all of the characters involved, why not let
them share there thoughts as well. You may want to start
with the main character telling the story and switch
later to your supporting actor, so to speak, and share
their vision. However, it would be wise to change back
and end your story with your main character. They will be
the anchor of the short story.
Remember anyone can write a story, you dont have to
be an award-winning author. Every piece of work is unique
in its own right, but it helps to go through one of the
many online art schools to learn the
different styles of writing available. You cannot just
write one piece and decide you arent very good at
it. Like any art, it takes practice and work. You must
take into account there are guidelines that you can
choose to follow and advice that may suit you very well.
This guidance could help make you a more vivid, capturing
storyteller, and that should be the overall goal. You
want to kidnap your reader and leave them with a
hungering thirst for more as they read the last bit of
